Background of the Study:
International media play a crucial role in shaping perceptions of state legitimacy by influencing public opinion both domestically and internationally. In Abuja, global news networks’ coverage affects how the state is viewed in terms of governance, transparency, and accountability (Peterson, 2023). This study examines the impact of international media narratives on state legitimacy, analyzing how news coverage can bolster or undermine public trust. It investigates the role of media framing, editorial bias, and the dissemination of information through digital platforms. The research considers the interplay between international news networks and domestic political discourse, highlighting how external portrayals interact with internal perceptions to affect state legitimacy. The study also addresses the challenges of media concentration and the potential for misinformation to distort the image of the state (Chukwu, 2024). By integrating media studies with political analysis, the research provides a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of global news on state legitimacy, drawing on case studies and content analysis of media coverage in Abuja.
Statement of the problem:
Despite the importance of international media, there is growing concern that biased or inaccurate coverage may undermine state legitimacy in Abuja. Misrepresentations and negative portrayals can erode public trust and impact international relations, raising critical questions about media accountability (Okafor, 2023). This study aims to explore the extent of media influence on state legitimacy, identifying key factors that shape public perceptions and suggesting measures to promote balanced reporting.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of international media coverage on state legitimacy in Abuja.
To identify factors in media reporting that influence public perception.
To recommend strategies for improving media accountability and balanced reporting.
Research questions:
How does international media coverage affect perceptions of state legitimacy in Abuja?
What elements of news reporting contribute to positive or negative state images?
How can media practices be improved to ensure balanced coverage?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it highlights the powerful role of international media in shaping state legitimacy. The insights gained will assist policymakers and media regulators in developing strategies to mitigate bias and enhance the credibility of news reporting, ultimately contributing to more informed public discourse (Lawrence, 2024).
